Is monthly church SEO worth it? An honest answer
When monthly church SEO is worth paying for, when a volunteer can handle it, the promises to walk away from, and what real progress looks like on our own site.
Is monthly church SEO worth paying for, or is it one of those things agencies sell because it never ends? It's a fair question. I sell it, so let me give you the honest version: when it's worth paying for, when it isn't, and what to watch out for.
I'm Zach, and I run White Oak Media. We've been helping churches get found online since 2019.
What monthly church SEO actually is
Most of the big wins in church SEO happen once. You claim your Google Business Profile, fill it out completely, fix your page titles, put your town and service times where Google can see them, and clean up old listings with the wrong address. If you haven't done those yet, our church SEO guide walks through them in order.
Monthly SEO is everything after that. Keeping your profile current, posting to it, replying to reviews, catching listings that drift out of date, fixing things on your site that break, and checking what's working. None of it is complicated. It just has to happen every month, and that's the part that tends to slip.
When it's worth paying for
When nobody owns it. If your profile still lists last year's Christmas Eve times, or reviews sit unanswered for months, the problem isn't knowledge. It's that nobody has the job. Paying someone to own it can make sense.
When your church is growing or changing. A new campus, a new service time, a new name, a move. Every change has to reach Google, Apple Maps, Facebook and every directory you're listed in, and mismatches confuse people and search engines alike.
When you're competing in a busy area. In a town with many churches, the ones with complete profiles, steady reviews and a site that loads fast have an edge. Google's own help page says complete, accurate information and more positive reviews can help a local ranking.
When you want to know what's happening. A good monthly report tells you how many people found you and what they searched. Those numbers are worth seeing.
When it isn't
When the basics aren't done. Monthly work on top of a broken website or an unclaimed profile is wasted money. Fix the foundation first.
When a volunteer will really do it. If you have someone who enjoys this and will spend an hour or two a month on it, you may not need to pay anyone. Give them the SEO guide and a calendar reminder.
When someone promises you the number one spot. Walk away. Google says plainly that there's no way to request or pay for a better local ranking. Anyone who guarantees rankings is guessing or selling something else.
What real progress looks like
I'll use our own site as an example, since it's the one I can show you. In the four weeks to September 26, 2026, clicks to whiteoakmedia.io from Google were up 55% on the four weeks before, and our average position improved by nearly 4 spots. Nothing dramatic caused it. We published regularly, fixed pages and kept at it.
That's what monthly SEO looks like when it works: small, steady gains that add up. If someone shows you a sudden jump in the first month, ask what they did.
Here's the other honest part. Some of our own pages rank on the first page and still get very few clicks, so we rewrite them and watch again. Monthly SEO is mostly that loop: look at the numbers, fix what isn't working, check again.
Questions to ask before you pay anyone
- What exactly do you do each month, and will I see it?
- Who owns our Google profile and our listings if we stop working with you?
- Will you report on how many people found us and what they searched, in plain words?
- Is there a long contract?
Your church should always own its own Google profile and accounts. If a provider won't give you access, that's a red flag.
What we do each month
Our Church Visibility Optimization is $215 a month. Each month we manage your Google Business Profile and post to it, monitor your reviews and help you reply, keep your church listed accurately across church directories and local listings, add the structured data search engines read, fix technical problems on your site, and send you a plain report on where you rank and how many people found you. There's no setup fee and no long contract.
If you'd like to know whether it would help your church, run our free church website health check first, or grab a time on my calendar and we'll look at it together. You can also call me at (860) 854-4983. And if a volunteer can handle it, I'll tell you that too.
